The Sun Never Shined In September 2020, 2021
LIZ YOSHIKO SCHMIDT
Oil on canvas
62 x 62 inches
Through her gestural handling of oil paint, this image of a bedroom windowsill (normally an everyday scenario, which is a common theme of Schmidt’s paintings) directs the eye through the glass and into a radiating orange atmosphere.
In the Fall of 2020, an acid orange sky descended upon San Francisco as wildfires torched across California, amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. The dramatically framed (almost staged) phenomenon also references the spectacle that Schmidt experiences as an internationally active professional figure skater.
Liz inaugurated Upper Market Gallery’s Studio Residency program located in San Francisco’s North Beach neighborhood. The Sun Never Shined In September 2020 is based off a portrait of Liz’s own home (see the last image for reference.)
