UPPER MARKET GALLERY is pleased to present an exhibition of paintings by LAINA TERPSTRA. This exhibition will include a sampling of the painter’s newest works alongside older works, forming connections within her evolving language of abstraction.

In developing her practice, the artist has drawn inspiration largely from the old masters, in particular 17th century Dutch painters, utilizing their architectural compositions as a scaffold to hold figurative movement in space. In her work, organic and architectural forms present two distinct modes which engage in a balancing act akin to dance. One mode provides a grounding element, defining planes, boundaries, and providing perspectival dimension — while the other is untethered, guided by fluid gestures that move freely into new realms and frequencies. Over time, representational cues from her source material have mostly dissolved into abstraction, yet the compositions retain an intuitive structure that evokes realistic space and light. Her work explores a liminal space that is sensed rather than recognized, and defined through a logic of sensation, movement, and vibration.

Laina Terpstra (b. 1991 SF) lives and works in San Francisco.
