INVISIBLE CITIES
[If you are interested in purchasing a work, please contact the gallery for more information.]
THE SONOMA 5 presents INVISIBLE CITIES at UPPER MARKET GALLERY. Invisible Cities takes its inspiration from Italo Calvino’s novel of a fictional conversation between the Mogol Emperor Kubla Khan and Marco Polo. The worlds conjured by the young explorer may be inventions (magical, surreal, poetic, oblique, or familiar) but they are all, in a sense, mirrors of the human imagination. The book is a gallery of portraits – of will, desire, beauty, and despair, and of each individual’s reactions to space, memory, the known, and the unknowable.
The artists invite you to consider the works presented as gateways to your own imaginative response. Ask yourself: What is the language of this place (color, form, line, shape, texture)? What are its customs, urgencies, and boundaries? What belief might I shed to embrace this new experience? How does it make me feel to look through the eyes of another? Could I live here?
THE SONOMA 5 is a freeform Northern California artist collective united by our shared interest in contemporary art, storytelling, & the enduring power of creative community.
